Herons in Snow Greeting Card - Ohara Koson

A greeting card using the colour woodblock print 'Herons in Snow' by Ohara Koson (1877-1945)

Koson was born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa in the North of Japan. He studied painting as a student of Suzuki Koson whose name he adopted. He became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts where he produced woodblock triptychs illustrating episodes of the Russo-Japanese war. But it was his prints of birds and animals, which sold particularly well in the USA, that brought him to international attention. He was active designing prints until at least 1935, and died at his home Tokyo in 1945
