A greeting card using the painting 'Summer, 1928' by Winifred Nicholson (1893-1981)
Interested in painting from an early age Winifred Nicholson painted prolifically throughout her life generally in a representational style, though she experimented with abstraction in the 1930s. Referring to her floral images she said 'my paint brush always gives a tremor of pleasure when I let it paint a flower'. Her work is held in Kettle's Yard and the Tate Gallery as well as in private collections. Winifred Nicholson painted 'Summer' at Feock, Cornwall, where she stayed in the summer of 1928. She described it as 'a sleeping beauty's countryside of southern foliage, sheltered creeks and wide expanse of placid water'.
