It is hard to imagine a world without grass. It seems to be everywhere; in gardens, parks and throughout the landscape. Across the world there are vast areas of grassland, including the African savannah, North American plains, South American pampas and steppe of Central Asia. Grass biomes cover 30% of the total land area of Earth, and grasses can also be dominant in other habitats, such as tundra and wetlands. Although widespread today, grasses are actually relative newcomers in the Earth's history. Early forms of grass first appeared 85 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period, at the same time as the last dinosaurs.
