This guide shows 33 different fruits and seeds produced by woody plants in Britain and Ireland.
Many plants produce seeds to help them spread. The seed contains the plant's embryo plus a small food reserve inside a protective coat. Since plants cannot walk to new places, they are forced to disperse their seeds in other ways. The shape of the fruit (the structure which surrounds the seeds) is a good clue to how each plant's seeds are spread. Some fruits are adapted to bed eaten by animals, while other fruits are dispersed by wind or water.
Rebecca Farley-Brown is Head of Publications and Simon Norman is a Resource Development Officer for Field Studies Council Publications. Lizzie Harper is a leading freelance natural history illustrator.
