Ducks, geese and swans are birds within the family Anatidae. They are easiest to find near water; from the dabbling ducks that live in shallow ponds, streams and canals to the diving ducks and sawbills found around the coast. Some species occur in large groups in the winter, so they are a good group to look out for when there is not much other wildlife. The males also have their distinctive colouration in winter. Identification of male ducks is much more difficult in summer as they moult, losing their bright and distinctive colours, and adopting what is known as 'eclipse' plumage, much more similar to that of the female.
The 32 species shown on this chart include all the wild ducks, geese and swans that you are likely to see in Great Britain and Ireland. Not included are domestic ducks and geese, largely descended from Mallard and Greylag Goose respectively. Feral domestic ducks and domestic-Mallard mixes can occur.
Mike Langman is a wildlife artist renowned for his illustrations of birds. Simon Norman works for FSC.
