This guide covers some of the common tree, flower, fern and fungus species that you may see when exploring woodland habitats. It is by no means exhaustive of all the species you could possibly see, as many are dependent on regional location and soil type. The aim is that in using this guide, you will be able to correctly identify the most commonly and widely distributed woodland species. Taking a walk in the woodland habitat is one of the best ways to get outdoors and explore nature. Approximately 13% of the UK is covered in woodlands; begin to discover how rich and diverse they are with the help of this guide.

Throughout the year our woodlands change with the seasons. While the best display of flowers and trees is often seen around spring and summer, there is still much still to explore in autumn and winter including fungi, evergreen trees, and some flowers, such as snowdrops. This guide can be used throughout the year and offers you advice on the winter identification of many deciduous trees and other species you may find.

The tree and flower height given in the species notes is a general guide. The typical average height can vary depending on numerous conditions such as: temperature, light, and nutrient availability. Certain species of tree, flower and fungus listed in this guide are highly poisonous; this is indicated in the 'Species Notes', please take care around these species.
