The name Lavenham derives from the Saxon words meaning 'the homestead of a man called Lafa'. There has been a settlement there since pre-Roman times, and the central street plan is unchanged from the medieval period. Its charm and interest lie in the extraordinary preservation of so many old houses, but how old are the houses? Who built them? Who lived in them?
Piecing together each house's story through documents, photographs and the recollections of the occupants, the author has written a portrait of 11 houses, based around a picturesque walk.
Paula Stevens is a Lavenham resident with a keen interest in local history. A guide at Lavenham Guildhall, she also conducts guided walks in Lavenham for the National Trust.
